Orthodontics Residents

Thomas Hoopes

Thomas Hoopes, Orthodontics Class of 2023, grew up in Wayland, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston, with his parents and three younger siblings. He spent three years in braces and developed a close relationship with his amazing orthodontist, which contributed greatly to his career choice.

Before graduating high school, he earned a black belt in Kung Fu and won multiple gold medals in international martial arts competitions. He moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to attend the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering in mechanical engineering and developed a fan-powered backpack as his capstone project to help deal with the humid Philly summers.

Hoopes then moved on to New York City, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Columbia University. He served as class president and received the American College of Dentists Outstanding Student Leader Award. Hoopes enthusiastically accepted a position to pursue his orthodontics training at the Adams School of Dentistry and feels honored to be able to serve the Tar Heel community.

Outside of orthodontics, Hoopes loves exploring the immense amount of hiking available in North Carolina with his dog, Sawyer. He also enjoys cooking, watching Formula 1 racing, and rooting for his Boston sports teams.
