Oliveira Joins Department of Operative Dentistry
Dr. Gustavo “Gus” Oliveira recently began his appointment as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry.

I feel so welcomed by people at UNC,” said Oliveira. “The Department of Operative Dentistry is a world-class department, embedded in excellence, tradition, respect among peers, and with a clear direction. These are fundamental elements of a vibrant environment. It is truly an honor to be part of this team, now as a full-time faculty member. I look forward to contributing to the continued growth and success of the Department of Operative Dentistry for many years to come. I’m a Tar Heel!”
In this role, Oliveira will be responsible for clinical teaching as a group practice director in the second- and third-year General Dentistry Clinic. His activities include providing clinical instruction, supervising diagnosis and treatment plan development, and mentoring students, among others. He will also see patients two half-days per week in the Dental Faculty Practice.
“I am very enthusiastic about the appointment of Dr. Gus Oliveira,” said Dr. André Ritter, chair of the Department of Operative Dentistry. “He has had a prolific academic career with a notable scholarship track record. We’re glad to welcome him back to Chapel Hill in this capacity and look forward to his strong contributions to our department.”
Oliveira earned his DDS degree from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, after which he practiced for one year before relocating to the U.S. He enrolled in the school’s Operative Dentistry Graduate Program in 2006 and earned his master’s and certificate in operative dentistry in 2009. Upon his graduation, he left UNC to work as an assistant professor in the University of Louisville School of Dentistry Department of General Dentistry and Oral Medicine.
He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Dental Education Association and the Academy of Operative Dentistry. Oliveira is the author of a score of articles published in highly regarded journals covering a number of topics.
