Lucci Begins Appointment with Operative Dentistry
Dr. Gary Lucci recently began his appointment as clinical associate professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry.
“I am truly looking forward to working with the students. With over three decades in private practice, I hope to impart some insight into how they might effective apply what they have learned here,” said Lucci. “Communication is key, not only between faculty and students, but also between the students and their patients. I want to convey to the students, that when discussing treatment with their patients, they should do so in a way that draws on mutually understandable forms of reference.”
In his role as clinical associate professor, Lucci’s responsibilities will include assisting students in understanding the role of the general practicioner in guiding their patient treatment, the selection and utilization of appropriate dental materials / procedures and developing a functional understanding of occlusion. His primary area of focus is in restorative dentistry.
“I am thrilled that we were able to recruit Dr. Lucci for a full-time position in our department,” said Dr. Andre Ritter, interim chair of the Department of Operative Dentistry. “He has been an adjunct faculty since 2012, and feedback from students, staff and faculty about Dr. Lucci as a faculty member and colleague has been overwhelmingly positive. Dr. Lucci brings a wealth of experience to our clinical programs at the School of Dentistry. I am confident that Dr. Lucci will have a positive impact in our students’ training, and will be an excellent addition to our department.”
Lucci, who received his B.S. in biology from Fairleigh Dickenson University in 1978, earned his D.M.S. from Temple University School of Dentistry. Following his graduation from dental school in 1982, he went into private practice. He also served on the membership committee of the Atlantic/Cape May Dental Society and as a membership representative to the New Jersey Dental Association. Prior to joining the faculty at UNC, he served as adjucnt professor in a general practice model at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry.
