Andrea Zandona Begins Appointment as School Cariologist

Effective September 1, Dr. Andrea Zandona began her appointment as associate professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry.

“I am excited to be here,” said Zandona. “UNC has a tremendous reputation as a research institution and I look forward to my career here. I am also eager to collaborate with the faculty at the School of Dentistry to have UNC at forefront of the clinical caries management.”

In this new capacity, Zandona will help the school update and advance its didactic and clinical teaching techniques with the latest dental caries diagnostic, preventive and treatment methods. She will be the first cariologist on faculty at the school and will serve as the go-to expert on understanding the caries disease process and its diagnostic and risk assessment methods.

“We’re thrilled that Dr. Zandona has chosen to join our school in this capacity,” said school Dean Jane Weintraub. “We’re excited to have a cariologist on faculty here at the school to help educate our students on evidence-based methods for preventing and treating caries, not just filling the resulting cavity. She is going to be a great addition to our school.”

Zandona earned her D.D.S. in 1990 from Pontifical Catholic University of Parana, Brazil. She later earned in M.S in operative dentistry from the Indiana University School of Dentistry and then her Ph.D. in dental sciences in 1997 from the same university. Since graduating with her Ph.D., she’s been on the faculty of the Indiana University School of Dentistry in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry as an associate professor with tenure.
