Ziemiecki Appointed Interim Prosthodontics Chair
Dr. Thom Ziemiecki began his appointment as interim chair of the Department of Prosthodontics on July 1. He takes over for Dr. Al Guckes, who is beginning his phased retirement after serving as interim chair for the last six months. Guckes will serve as a professor and deputy interim chair for the department.
“I am immensely grateful that Dr. Ziemiecki agreed to step into this role while we’re looking for a new permanent chair for the Department of Prosthodontics,” said Dean Jane Weintraub. “I know he will do a great job in this capacity. I’m also thankful for the leadership of Dr. Guckes who led the department for the first few months of this year. I appreciate the way the two of them have worked together and will continue to work together until a permanent chair is found.”
As interim department chair, Ziemiecki will be in charge of overseeing the department administratively as well as clinically. Ziemiecki will remain interim department chair until a permanent chair is appointed after a search is conducted. Prior to July 1, Ziemiecki served as deputy interim chair for the department and assisted Guckes when necessary.
Ziemiecki joined the UNC School of Dentistry Department of Prosthodontics in 1997 as an associate professor. He is active in a number of professional organizations and is also a member of the NorthEast Regional Board of Dental Examiners. He earned his B.S. in biology from Wayne State University, and his D.D.S. and his M.S. in restorative dentistry from the University of Michigan.
