Vakil Elected Vice President of ASDA

Shamik Vakil, who will graduate from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry in 2008, was recently elected vice president of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA).

The announcement was made during ASDA’s annual session, held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Aug. 29 through Sept. 2.

Also serving as vice president will be Rhett Raum, who will graduate from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 2008. Wayne Stephens, who attends the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, was elected president.

Vakil’s previous ASDA roles include district trustee and member-at-large.

In related news, Vakil was recently appointed to serve as a member of the ASDA delegation to the 2007 American Dental Association (ADA) House of Delegates, which will meet during the ADA’s Annual Session in San Francisco Sept. 27 through 30. This will be Vakil’s second term as delegate.

Members of the House of Delegates, which is the ADA’s legislative and governing body, are selected by the 53 constituent societies, the five federal dental services and ASDA.

ASDA is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of students pursuing careers in dentistry.
