Ziemiecki Is Appointed Interim Prosthodontics Chair

Dr. Thomas L. Ziemiecki has been appointed interim chair of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry’s Department of Prosthodontics, effective June 30.

A nationwide search is under way for a permanent chair, said Dean John N. Williams.

“Prosthodontics at Carolina has been a cornerstone of our curriculum and an area of teaching excellence,” he said. “I want to enhance the role of prosthodontics in our graduate and predoctoral programs, consistent with our goals in Carolina 2010 [the School’s academic plan].”

Dr. Ed Kanoy is stepping down from his position as the department’s chair after serving in that role since 2002. Williams has appointed Kanoy to lead the School’s newly formed Workgroup on Clinical Education, which is studying and implementing ideas that will enhance learning opportunities for predoctoral students, with emphasis on fourth-year DDS students.

Ziemiecki has been an associate professor of prosthodontics at the School of Dentistry since 1997. Previously, he was director of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Endodontology at the University of Connecticut. He has nearly 30 years of predoctoral teaching experience and has taught dozens of post-graduate/continuing dental education courses on restorative dentistry and other topics since joining the School of Dentistry faculty.
