About Kate

Kate Thieda, MS, LCMHC, NCC received her Master of Science in clinical counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and her Bachelor of Arts in English secondary education from Michigan State University.

She is a licensed clinical mental health counselor and a board-certified National Certified Counselor. Prior to joining the Adams School of Dentistry, Kate was a counselor with Duke Personal Assistance Service, the staff and faculty assistance program designed to maximize workplace well-being. In this role, Kate served as a wellness coach and counselor for graduate medical interns, residents, and fellows at Duke University Hospital.

Kate is the author of Loving Someone with Anxiety: Understanding and Helping Your Partner (New Harbinger Publications, 2013), and has written for numerous print and online publications, including PsychCentral.com and PsychologyToday.com.

Outside of work, you can find Kate running and lifting weights in the gym, working on dollhouse rehabilitation, stand-up paddleboarding, and spending time with her wife, Annette, and their three cats, Jasmine, Deegan, and Leo.

Appointments for Students and Residents

Life can be stressful while pursuing a professional degree, and the UNC Adams School of Dentistry is dedicated to your wellness while you are a student here.

Whether you are enrolled in a dental hygiene, DDS, or ADE program, you are eligible for one-on-one wellness coaching sessions with Kate Thieda, MS, LCMHC, NCC, director of student wellness.

If you would like to schedule an appointment for one-on-one wellness coaching, please click here to select a time that works best for you. Kate’s office is located at 3505 Koury Oral Health Sciences Bldg.

Initial appointments are scheduled for 60 minutes. Follow-up appointments can be either 30 minutes or 45 minutes long to accommodate your schedule and needs. Please only schedule one appointment at a time.

  • Mental health concerns (stress, anxiety, depression, burnout)
  • Academic concerns
  • Family or relationship issues
  • Career concerns
  • Anything and everything else!

In the event of an emergency after hours or on weekends, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for assistance.
