The Rural Oral Health Scholars Program

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry partnered with the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) to establish a rural health scholars initiative for dental students who are interested in practicing in a rural area of North Carolina.

Program Overview

1ST YEAR STUDENTS:

  • June, July: Applications accepted

2ND YEAR STUDENTS:

  • September: Selection notifications sent
  • Fall Semester: Monthly seminars begin
  • August: One week summer externship at MAHEC Asheville, North Carolina

3RD YEAR STUDENTS:

Throughout their third year, students will interact with colleagues from other health programs to obtain a holistic and collaborative experience. Monthly seminars continue, building upon previous topics to help students develop a knowledge base and skill set. Discussions are designed to foster a professional, supportive cohort.

4TH YEAR STUDENTS:

May through September or mid-October through March: Guaranteed acceptance into one of the fourth year Adams School of Dentistry programs in western North Carolina for a five-month rotation.
