Overview

B. Lamont Lowery joined the UNC Adams School of Dentistry’s Office of Admissions and Student Life as the Assistant Dean for Student Recruitment and Engagement in July 2020. He oversees recruitment and pathway efforts while fostering a diverse and inclusive campus environment. Prior to UNC, he served for 10 years as the Director of Admissions for the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Since joining UNC, Mr. Lowery has made a significant impact. He became a member of the Carolina Engagement Council in January 2022, advising the Carolina Across 100 initiative. He also contributes to the “Our State, Our Work” program’s application review team, helping to assess community applications and select participants for each cohort.

Mr. Lowery has built strong collaborative relationships with pre-health advisors nationwide, as well as with NC Area Health Education Centers and North Carolina HOSA-Future Health Professionals. His scholarly work includes co-authoring influential articles in the Journal of Dental Education: “”An Approach to Using Noncognitive Variables in Dental School Admissions”” (April 2014) and “”Holistic Admissions in Dental Education and Beyond”” (September 2022).

While at ECU, Mr. Lowery received a grant from the American Dental Education Association – Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to expand pathway programs for prospective dental students. This led to the co-founding of ECU’s Preparing Tomorrow’s Dentists (PTD) summer program. Under his leadership, the PTD program grew to become the umbrella for several other initiatives.

Since his arrival at UNC ASOD, he has founded the UNCRoots initiative, designed to introduce middle and high school students to dentistry, and created UNC Virtual Dentistry: Shadowing during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing global shadowing opportunities. These programs continue to date.

Mr. Lowery also serves as an advisor for the UNC’s Health Professions Advising program, a member of the executive team for North Carolina’s Alliance for Health Professions, serves as a member of the UNC Rural Initiatives collaborative and on the UNC ASOD admissions committee. His unwavering dedication continues to illuminate pathways for all, significantly contributing to the advancement of the dental profession.
