Janet Guthmiller, DDS, PhD, became the 9th dean of the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry on October 15, 2022. Dr. Guthmiller also holds the Claude A. Adams Jr. Distinguished Professorship. She joined the UNC Adams School of Dentistry following an eight-year tenure as the dean at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry where she lead dental programs serving over 300 students on five campuses across 500 miles. Under her leadership, the College of Dentistry launched two new educational programs to meet the needs of today’s students and built and renovated numerous facilities to foster cutting-edge teaching and learning and delivery of patient care. A strong advocate for public service, Dr. Guthmiller served as the principal investigator on a $4 million contract from the State of Nebraska to increase oral health services to underserved citizens of Nebraska and encouraged graduates to practice in underserved rural areas.
Dr. Guthmiller is a nationally recognized leader in dental education and an accomplished researcher, author and teacher. She has been the recipient of collegiate, university and national teaching and mentoring awards, including the Faculty Mentor of the Year from the National Student Research Group of the American Association for Dental Research in 2007 and a Chair of the American Dental Education Assocation (ADEA) Board of Directors Citation for significant contributions to dental education and ADEA through service on the New Thinking for the New Century Committee. Guthmiller’s NIDCR funded research has encompassed molecular biological studies of periodontal pathogens and expression and function of innate antimicrobials. She has published numerous manuscripts and abstracts, a book and several book chapters. Dr. Guthmiller is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.
Dr. Guthmiller is active in many professional organizations. She is past chair of the administrative board of the ADEA Council of Deans and past-president of the Supreme Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a national dental honor society. She is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement from Northwestern College, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Cellular and Structural Biology program at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and an Honorary Life Membership Award (2016) and Distinguished Service Award in 2021 from the UNMC College of Dentistry Alumni Association.
Dr. Guthmiller previously served as associate dean for academic affairs and professor of periodontology at UNC, overseeing all dental educational programs, faculty development and student admissions and affairs from 2007-2014. Prior to that, she served on the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She earned an associate degree in dental hygiene from the University of South Dakota, a bachelor’s from Northwestern College, a DDS from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and a periodontal certificate and a doctorate in cellular and structural biology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as a part of the NIH-sponsored Dentist-Scientist Program.
