Biosketch
Dr. Don Tyndall is Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. He was the Director of Radiology from 1988 to 2019 and Interim Director since September 2024. He has won several awards for teaching including the 2024 Richard F. Hunt Jr. Teaching Award for excellence in pre-doctoral teaching.
He was the creator of the UNC graduate program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (OMF). He served as Director of the OMF Radiology Predoctoral Program from 2020-2024. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (ABOMR) and was a Director and President from 1995-1999. Dr. Tyndall has twice served as the Councillor for Scientific Affairs and Public Policy on the Executive Council of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR). Dr. Tyndall served as President of the AAOMR in 2022-2023. In addition, he is a Fellow in the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists.
Dr. Tyndall currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Dental Association. He has also served as consultant to several dental imaging companies specializing in artificial intelligence, dental MRI, and intraoral tomosynthesis.
Research Interests
His research includes artificial intelligence, development of multisource carbon nanotube x-ray based CBCT units, and applications of CBCT, ddMRI and stationary intraoral tomosynthesis (sIOT) in dentistry. His work as author or co-author has been published in over 135 journal articles.
