Biosketch

Michael Roberts served 24 years in the U.S. Public Health Service. He was Deputy Clinical Director at the National Institute of Dental Research, NIH in Bethesda, Maryland for eight years. He has continued to serve as a clinical consultant to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research since 1989.

While a career commissioned officer in the USPHS, Roberts received the Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medal from Dr. C. Everett Koop. He was the recipient of the USPHS Chief Dental Officer’s Exemplary Service Award.

Roberts joined the UNC Adams School of Dentistry faculty in 1989. He served as chair of the pediatric dentistry program from 1994-2004, and the five previous years as the graduate program director. He is a past president and director/examiner for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and has served on the editorial boards of several dental and medical journals.

Research Interests

Oral implications of eating disorders. Basal metabolism index (BMI) percentile and caries incidence. Dental implications associated with medically compromised children.

Research Summary

Roberts’ major research interests include oral affects and management of eating disorders in adolescents and the use of lasers in pediatric dentistry. He has published over one hundred articles in professional journals and contributed to three textbooks.
