Controlled Substances and North Carolina Dentists: Approved Procedures for Prescribing and Monitoring While Safely and Effectively Managing Pain and Anxiety

This course will provide an update on the current impact of the opioid epidemic on dental practice, with an emphasis on the evidence-based selection of opioids and non-opioids for the safe and effective management of acute postoperative dental pain. Strategies for dealing with applicable rules and regulations pertaining to the prescription and administration and the recognition and prevention of drug abuse and diversion in dental patients and dental practice will also be covered. This course meets the criteria for relicensure as required by NC General Assembly and the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners (NCSBDE).

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the current impact of the opioid epidemic on dentists who prescribe controlled substances.
  • Select opioid and non-opioid analgesic for the management of acute postoperative pain based on high-level scientific evidence.
  • Recognize and prevent the abuse and diversion of controlled substances in dentistry.
