Inspiring Future Dental Professionals

At UNC Adams School of Dentistry, fostering an equity-based approach to student recruitment is a key mission. Central to this effort is the UNCRoots initiative, a program created by Lamont Lowery in collaboration with dental students Julianne Rivera and Aidée Manzano. This initiative aims to introduce high school and middle school students to the profession of dentistry, providing them with valuable exposure and early interest in dental careers.

About UNCRoots

UNCRoots is designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities for young students, including pre-clinical activities, lectures, and research modules. By targeting students at an early age, the program helps to stimulate or awaken an interest in dental careers that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Impact

The UNCRoots initiative and UNC Adams School of Dentistry are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of dental professionals. By providing students with early exposure to the profession of dentistry, the program aims to inspire and empower young individuals, particularly those from first-generation, rural, or socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Through these efforts, UNCRoots is helping to build a more diverse and inclusive future for the dental profession.

A Spotlight on UNCRoots Events

Event Highlights

A recent UNCRoots event showcases the impact of this initiative on a group of middle and high school students. Organized by Mr. Lowery, Assistant Dean of Student Recruitment and Engagement, the event aimed to provide these students with a comprehensive understanding of medical and dental education pathways.

Information Session

The visit began with informative sessions focused on what universities look for in applicants, offering insights into valuable programs that could enhance their academic journeys. Students then enjoyed guided tours of the UNC Adams School of Dentistry, including the opportunity to explore and use the Simodont, a cutting-edge dental simulation technology. These tours were led by UNC student ambassadors who provided valuable perspectives and answered questions from the students.

Hands-on Activities

One of the highlights of the visit was a hands-on activity where students participated in a cavity preparation exercise followed by tooth restoration. Under the guidance of instructors and while wearing the required personal protective equipment (PPE), students learned the intricate process of tooth drilling for cavity repair. This immersive experience allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of dental procedures and the skills required for success in the field.

Student Presentation

Additionally, students engaged in a presentation led by current dental students, participated in activities in the simulation lab focusing on dental hygiene, and had the opportunity to meet Grayson, the school’s therapy dog. The day concluded with a comprehensive tour of the school facilities, leaving students with a positive and enriching experience.
