Dental Foundation of North Carolina, Inc.

The Dental Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. (DFNC) was chartered in November 1950, just two months after the UNC Adams School of Dentistry opened its doors, to support and enrich the school through private contributions. The foundation began with a modest goal of $100,000 to support research, student loans, scholarships and other projects not covered by state funding.

About the DFNC

Today, the DFNC awards more than $4 million dollars annually in scholarships, fellowships, and faculty professorships and awards, program support and facility updates, including the private funding campaign that helped make Koury Oral Health Sciences Building possible.

In total, the 501(c)(3) charitable not-for-profit organization holds nearly $130 million in private assets that are managed by its Board of Directors, comprising UNC Adams School of Dentistry alumni and friends.

Donors can elect to give to the DFNC through a number of methods and specifically to any number of funds which support the school.

For more information, contact the Office of Advancement at (919) 537-3257 and ask to speak with Paul Gardner, executive director of DFNC and associate dean for advancement, Sarah Huppert, senior director of development, or John Bonvechio, regional director of development.

Ways to Give

Friends and alumni of the school who would like to make a tax-deductible contribution are invited to consider the following giving options:

  • Give online anytime
  • Non-cash gifts
Stocks, bonds, real estate, personal property and other non-cash assets may be considered non-cash gifts to the DFNC. Income dedications of these gifts equal fair market value of the item at the time of the gift and are fully deductible up to 30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income for the year.
  • Planned gifts
It can sometimes be beneficial from an estate and financial planning perspective to contribute through a planned gift. This type of gift includes charitable remainder trusts, bequests, charitable lead trusts, and gift annuities, among others. These often reduce estate taxes, provide an income tax deduction and offer the satisfaction of making an impact on the UNC School of Dentistry for generations to come.
