Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externship

About the Externship

This is a one-to-four week rotation in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for third- and fourth-year dental students from the U.S. or Canadian dental schools, or medical residents interested in additional exposure to the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

During the rotation, the student will observe and participate in operating room and clinical procedures under the direction of the faculty and chief resident. The extern will attend all weekly didactic conferences and attend ward rounds at UNC Health daily.

It is expected that the extern will take call with the resident on first call. Up to two externs per month will be accepted on a space available basis. The program does not provide (e.g., food, lodging) to support these activities.

Opportunities

This program will provide dental students with exposure to a broad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, especially operating room and perioperative care of the surgical patient, as well as experience in extraction of teeth and minor surgical procedures an outpatient in clinic setting. Students perform minor dentoalveolar procedures in the outpatient clinic.

Students take calls with junior and senior residents, including accompanying junior residents and helping with duties. Student will go to the operating room at the discretion of the chief resident.

Application Materials

In addition to the application, please submit the following materials:

  • Letter of recommendation from department chairman or OMFS director of dental student education at the applicant’s school
  • Documentation of malpractice insurance in effect during the externship
  • Documentation of a negative TB testing with both date placed and date read within one year of the last day of the externship period
  • Documentation of BLS/CPR training within two years of the last day of externship period
  • UNC Hospital Confidentially and Code of Conduct Form
