Andrews Appointed Associate Dean for Strategy and Compliance

Andy Andrews, BA ’06, MAC ’07, JD ’12, has been appointed the associate dean for strategy and compliance at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry.

“I am so pleased to bring Andy on as the new associate dean for strategy and compliance,” said Interim Dean Julie Byerley, MD, MPH. “He has been an incredible asset to the school over the last four years in his role within the Office of University Counsel, and his experience with the school and healthcare is especially valuable to our community.

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry includes complex and wide-ranging operations – including significant research, science education, on-campus and off-campus clinical education, direct patient care, and coordination with clinical and research functions both within the University and with UNC Health. Andrews’ primary responsibilities will be to help address issues that arise from time to time in the school’s various operations and work with faculty and leaders to implement the Adams School of Dentistry’s goals and priorities, as well as leading negotiations and relationships with external partners of the school.

As associate dean, he will provide recommendations for solutions to address complex issues throughout the school including assessing risks, recommendations to mitigate risk, proposing solutions to balance compliance with available opportunities, and prioritizing the Adams School of Dentistry resources to operationalize solutions.

Andrews will support various operational initiatives and will have a significant role in negotiating school affiliations with internal and external partners and serve as the school’s privacy officer. He will also help maintain and expand relationships with NC Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) facilities, especially MAHEC and SEAHEC, Local Start Dental and UNC Health.

Additionally, Andrews may teach periodic elective classes on the business of dentistry and the legal and risk issues of operating a dental practice.

“I’ve enjoyed supporting the Adams School of Dentistry’s leaders in my prior role in the Office of University Counsel for the past four years,” said Andrews. “I’m excited by and grateful for the opportunity to engage more deeply on strategy, compliance and operational matters with the school’s renowned faculty and teammates.”

Andrews received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from UNC-Chapel Hill, his Master of Accounting from Kenan-Flagler Business School and his Juris Doctor degree from UNC School of Law. Prior to joining the Adams School of Dentistry, he worked in UNC-Chapel Hill’s Office of University Counsel as an associate university counsel for healthcare and transactions. Prior to joining the legal team at Carolina, Andrews worked in private legal practice.
