Joy Gerasco

Joy grew up in Columbus, Ohio where she completed a Bachelor’s of Science in chemistry at the Ohio State University. She completed a DMD/PhD program at Medical University of South Carolina in 2021 and defended her dissertation in the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Woster in the Department of Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences in June of 2019.

Her research was focused on development of small molecule epigenetic immunomodulatory compounds for treatment of periodontal disease. Joy served as president of student government at MUSC in her final year and loves to tackle difficult problems in a team setting.

Joy loves horror movies and listening to psychological thriller audiobooks. She also has a special appreciation for spiders and bugs. She has taken several hip-hop and ballroom dancing classes over the years. Joy loves to create all kinds of art – especially ceramics, drawing and painting.

Joy’s 10-year plan is to be the principal investigator of a research lab focused on osteoimmunological evaluation of orthodontic tooth movement.
