Yoon Chi, Periodontology Class of 2023, was born in Seoul, South Korea and came to Canada with her family when she was 14 years old.
After completing high school in British Columbia, she moved to Montreal, Quebec to complete her Bachelor of Science and majored in Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University.
Her interest in these topics led her to pursue PhD training in cartilage biology and osteoarthritis later at McGill University. During her PhD training, Chi underwent several life-altering dental treatments and surgeries and learned that dentistry is not only about the mouth, but also about the patient’s overall well-being.
This solidified her interest in oral biology with a special focus in bone and cartilage research, which remains a cornerstone in dental research today. She obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2020 at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.
During her dental training, Chi was actively engaged in dental research, mainly in understanding the changes in the temporomandibular joint of aging mice. She found her passion in not only engaging in and promoting dental research, but also advocating the importance of oral health education in the community.
In her free time, Chi enjoys hot yoga to help her relax and live a balanced lifestyle. She also loves exploring the outdoors while hiking and spending time with her family and friends.
