Wallet Begins Appointment as Associate Dean for Research
Effective August 2019, Shannon Wallet, PhD, began her appointment as associate dean for research at the UNC-CH Adams School of Dentistry.
As associate dean of research, Wallet will primarily be responsible for leading and overseeing the ongoing development of the UNC-CH Adams School of Dentistry’s research portfolio, identifying new areas of research, mentoring early-career and mid-career faculty, and pursuing research funding opportunities.
She is also responsible for teaching in pre-doctoral and advanced dental education students and encouraging active engagement in mentoring of graduate and postdoctoral students and junior faculty.
“I am looking forward driving, building and reinvigorating an innovate and collaborative research enterprise for the UNC-CH Adams School of Dentistry,” said Wallet. “It is my philosophy that for someone to succeed in this task, they need to appreciate the value of each individual and their unique skill sets bur more importantly, appreciate how a diversity of skill sets are needed to support the mission and goals of the institution. It is my opinion that the UNC-CH Adams School of Dentistry is uniquely poised not just intellectually and physically but has the diversity of skill sets to become a research powerhouse.”
Wallet will also serve as the director of the school’s Office of Research Administration. The office provides services related to grant and contract submissions, post-award grants management, human subjects research guidance, and general oversight of research facilities within the school.
She will work with school’s leadership to facilitate and sustain an optimal research and research training environment where faculty, students, research fellows and visiting scholars can generate new knowledge in the basic, applied and clinical sciences, as well as in the areas of health services, health policy, and health education and research.
“Dr. Wallet brings a passionate, collaborative, creative and bold vision to our research enterprise. She will continue to advance our research programs and discovery at the highest level with purposeful collaboration with partners across the University,” said Dean Scott De Rossi, DMD, MBA. “I am excited for her to join our faculty, as she is fully committed to retaining and recruiting top-notch talent, and to advancing the scholarship of discovery, integration, application and teaching.”
Wallet received her PhD from the UNC-Chapel Hill. She has held appointments as a tenured professor in the Department of Periodontology at the University of Florida, and most recently, as an associate professor in foundational sciences at the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. She has published more than 70 papers, co-authored two book chapters, and held reviewed articles at more than 11 journals.
