Cain Begins Appointment as Assistant Dean and Chief Operating Officer of the Dental Faculty Practice

On January 8, Kevin Cain, PhD, MBA, CMA, joined the school as its first assistant dean and chief operating officer of the Dental Faculty Practice.

“Words cannot capture how fortunate I feel and excited I am to be coming home to UNC to work with the School of Dentistry’s outstanding staff, faculty, and administration. I look forward to the opportunity to help move an already great dental faculty practice beyond excellence,” said Cain.

In his role as assistant dean, Cain will oversee all operations of the UNC Dental Faculty Practice (DFP). The DFP is one of the school’s three clinical practices and is the umbrella under which the school’s faculty provide patient care. Comprising more than 65 oral health care providers covering more than 15 dental specialties, the DFP offers patients all facets of care in one facility. The UNC School of Dentistry was one of the nation’s first dental schools to institute a faculty practice and the DFP at UNC is one of the nation’s largest.

“I am thrilled that Kevin has joined us at UNC to direct our Dental Faculty Practice,” said Dean Scott S. De Rossi, DMD, MBA. “Kevin brings a savvy business perspective and a thorough knowledge about the landscape of oral health care to this position, which will allow him to help our DFP grow its patient base and improve its service to the people of North Carolina.”

Cain returns to UNC from Augusta University, where he was an assistant professor of management at James M. Hull College of Business, taught graduate and undergraduate strategy and entrepreneurship courses, and guest lectured in the practice management course at the Dental College of Georgia. His research focuses on business and entrepreneurship in dentistry and he previously co-founded several dental-related ventures.

Cain earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following a couple of years working in the Triangle, he earned his Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University and, later, his Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. He also holds a certified management accountant designation.
