Dr. Edward Swift, longtime chair of the Department of Operative Dentistry, was recently appointed as the school’s new associate dean for education. This appointment became effective last month.
“It is a real privilege to serve as the associate dean for education at the UNC School of Dentistry,” said Swift. “The school has a long tradition of enrolling and educating excellent students, and I hope to continue that tradition.”
Swift’s responsibilities as associate dean include the oversight and implementation of the current predoctoral (DDS) curriculum and new initiatives, acting as the point person for the school’s preparation and self-study for predoctoral accreditation, and ensuring compliance with University policies. Additionally, Swift will oversee other activities of the Office of Academic Affairs, including admissions and student affairs, faculty development, and inter-professional education.
“In his new role, Dr. Swift serves as the chief administrative officer responsible for fostering excellence for all of our academic programs: DDS, advanced dental education, dental hygiene and dental assisting, for more than 500 students and residents,” said Jane Weintraub, dean of the UNC School of Dentistry. “I am confident that he is up to this task. His exemplary dedication to the school was recognized and honored last spring by all four DDS classes with the UNC Community Leadership Award at the annual Spurgeon Banquet.”
Prior to this appointment, Swift served as associate dean for education in an interim capacity. He also was previously the interim associate dean for student clinics and chair of the Department of Operative Dentistry. He earned his DMD from the Medical University of South Carolina and his master’s degree in operative dentistry from the University of Iowa.
