The first installment of this year’s Distinguished Speaker Series, presented by the Student Research Group, will feature Dr. Harald Heymann, a professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry. This hour-long event is scheduled for Wednesday, November 13 at 1 p.m. in Room G405 on the ground floor of Koury Oral Health Sciences Building. This is the second year the Student Research Group has organized the Distinguished Speaker Series.

“Dr. Heymann’s decades-long career as a researcher, textbook author and academician has impacted dental education at UNC, America and throughout the world,” said Brett Henson, president of the school’s SRG chapter. “The SRG is honored that he would speak to our group and the dental school community.”

At the event, Heymann will present a lecture titled The Great White Hype: Facts and Fallacies of Vital Tooth Whitening. His research activities are largely focused on esthetic restorative materials and he participates in dental practice devoted mainly to esthetic dentistry. Heymann has authored more than 175 scientific publications and textbook chapters, and is also a co-editor ofThe Art and Science of Operative Dentistry, which is currently the best-selling dental textbook worldwide.

Heymann earned his D.D.S. in 1978 from the UNC School of Dentistry, and stayed in Chapel Hill to complete his M.Ed. in 1980. He joined the UNC faculty in 1978, while earning his M.Ed. He holds memberships in the Academy of Operative Dentistry, the International Association of Dental Research and is a past-president and fellow of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry.
