Morelli Receives American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Fellowship
Dr. Thiago Morelli, director of the Predoctoral Periodontal Program, was recently named the recipient of the 2013 American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation Fellowship to the Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) in the Health Professions. The fellowship, presented annually by the AAP Foundation, honors periodontists involved in academia covering the full tuition for the institute’s program.
“I’m very honored to receive this award,” said Morelli. “The ITL program is a nationally-recognized educational program in the area of health professions. It will definitely help to solidify my academic career as a clinical professor. The recognition I received from the AAP Foundation is a significant acknowledgement of dedication to dental education.”
The fellowship won by Morelli will pay the $4,950 tuition for the ITL program. Morelli was one of six applicants selected for the fellowship this year.
Through the ITL program, faculty members may expect to gain competencies in teaching and other academic skills in the context of career planning. The program provides 6.5 days of training in two phases at dental schools. This real-life context for learning provides for large and small group sessions, interactive exercises, case-based and problem-based learning, peer observation of teaching, and reflective journals as well as mentored rotations with dental school faculty.
