AAO Appoints Frazier-Bowers to Scientific Council, Features her on Journal Website

Dr. Sylvia Frazier-Bowers, associate professor in the Department of Orthodontics, was recently appointed to serve on the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Council on Scientific Affairs (COSA). Additionally, for the month of August she is the featured author on the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO) website, the online home of AAO’s monthly journal.

“I am honored to contribute to the AAO through service and education; both of these recognitions from the AAO are quite humbling,” said Frazier-Bowers. “The appointment on the Council on Scientific Affairs is a tremendous opportunity to shape the current and future direction of scientific advances in the orthodontic specialty.”

As a newly-appointed member of the AAO COSA, Frazier-Bowers will be representing the Southern Association of Orthodontists along with representatives from seven other constituencies of the AAO across the country. As a COSA member, Frazier-Bowers will be a part of the team that selects several distinguished AAO research award winners annually. The committee also encourages and fosters the advancement of research in the orthodontic specialty. She will hold this appointment for a minimum of two years and may be reappointed for up to eight years.

Frazier-Bowers and her co-authors are featured on the AJO-DO website in a video discussing the results of their study published in the August AJO-DO. “We know that improper diagnosis can lead to improper treatment, therefore our study aimed to provide a user-friendly tool for clinicians to better diagnose eruption problems that are otherwise difficult to distinguish,” explained Frazier-Bowers. The research that led to the paper and video was completed in conjunction with two UNC School of Dentistry orthodontic residents, Drs. Stephanie Rhoads and Heather Hendricks. The video may be viewed on the journal’s website or on YouTube.
