Prosthodontics Residents Place in Sharry Research Competition

Two recently graduated UNC prosthodontics residents placed in the John J. Sharry Research Competition held during the American College of Prosthodontics Annual Session. This year marked the third consecutive year in which one or more UNC prosthodontics residents have participated as finalists in this competition.

This year, UNC residents represented two of the three competition finalists.

Bryan M. Limmer, D.M.D., M.S. ’12, was awarded first place for his project entitled “Complications and Patient Centered Outcomes with a Monolithic Zirconia Implant-Supported Fixed Dental Prosthesis.” Limmer is the 2012 UNC Dental Implant Fellow within the Department of Prosthodontics. Limmer graduated in May with his M.S. in prosthodontics and is currently the AstraTech Implant Fellow within the Department of Prosthodontics. Originally from Minnesota, Limmer earned his undergraduate degree from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. before relocating to Mass. to pursue his D.D.S.

Edward J. Givens, Jr., D.D.S., M.S. ’12, received third place recognition for his project entitled “Immediate Placement and Provisionalization of implants Placed into Sites with Periradicular Infection with and without Antibiotics- An Exploratory Study.” Givens, who graduated from the UNC prosthodontics program earlier this year, is currently practicing as a prosthodontist in the US Navy. He is a native of Michigan and completed his pre-doctoral training at the University of Michigan. During his career with the Navy, he’s been awarded the Navy Achievement Medal and Gold Star for exceptional delivery of dental care.

“We are proud of Drs. Limmer and Givens for their important contributions to research in prosthodontics,” said Dr. Thom Ziemiecki, interim chair of the Department of Prosthodontics. “It says a lot about the quality of their research that they both placed in the Sharry competition, which is highly regarded in prosthodontics.”

The Sharry Research Competition is held to stimulate and acknowledge original research in prosthodontics by students. Students are eligible if they are currently enrolled in a post-doctoral prosthodontic program or have completed such a program in the last three years.
