Weintraub to Keynote Dental Research in Review Day

Dr. Jane A. Weintraub, dean and alumni distinguished professor at the School of Dentistry and adjunct professor at the School of Public Health, will provide the keynote address at this year’s Dental Research in Review Day being held on Wednesday, February 29. This annual event is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and the public to learn about the School of Dentistry’s research efforts to improve the oral health of all people.

The keynote address will be held at 1:15 p.m. in room G202 of the Medical Biomolecular Research Building. Dean Weintraub’s presentation, titled An “Outlier’s” Research Path: Integrating Population Science, Clinical Practice and Health Policy to Improve Oral Health, will be approximately an hour long.

Before joining the UNC School of Dentistry in July, 2012, Dean Weintraub spent time at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) leading the Center to Address Disparities in Children’s Oral Health (CAN DO). After its first seven-year cycle of funding, this National Institutes of Health-funded center received an additional seven years of funding totaling $24.4 million, representing the biggest research grant in the UCSF School of Dentistry’s history. She is a past president of both the American Association of Public Health Dentistry and the International Association of Dental Research’s behavioral sciences and health services research group. Dean Weintraub also served as one of the scientific editors and contributing authors for the first Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health. Her notable awards include the 2009 International Association of Dental Research’s H. Trendley Dean Distinguished Scientist Award and the 2010 American Dental Association’s Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research.

Dental Research in Review Day, with the exception of the keynote address, will be held at the School of Dentistry, which is located at the corner of Manning Dr. and Columbia St. It is an all-day event.
