Resident Receives Endodontic Educator Award from American Association of Endodontics

Dr. Johnah C. Galicia, a first-year resident in the Department of Endodontics, received the Endodontic Educator Award from the American Association of Endodontics Foundation (AAE). This award, open to applicants from the US and Canada, aims to strengthen the field of endodontics by addressing the need for future endodontic specialists in academics. Dr. Galicia was one of three highly-qualified residents selected for the award out of a competitive applicant pool.

Dr. Galicia received his D.M.D. from the Manila Central University (MCU) in the Philippines. After passing the dental licensure examination in Manila, Dr. Galicia practiced general dentistry and earned a diploma in clinical dentistry from the University of Rennes in France in 2000, and later a Ph.D. in Oral Biology from Niigata University in Japan in 2006. During this time, Dr. Galicia served in academia as a faculty member at MCU and at the University of the East. His research career blossomed when he moved to the US in 2007; since then he has published more than 10 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has worked with some of the world’s experts in oral microbiology and immunology. Before joining UNC as a resident, Dr. Galicia was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.

Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Galicia will begin teaching full-time in a dental school while continuing to be actively involved in research and patient care.
