Rankin is New Director for the Office of Computing and Information Systems (OCIS)

Please welcome David Rankin to the UNC School of Dentistry. David started on January 31, 2011, as the Director of the Office of Computing and Information Systems (OCIS). He came to the UNC School of Dentistry from the NC Department of Health and Human Services where he was the Deputy Executive Director of the Division of Information Resource Management.

David is a Chapel Hill native and a graduate of Hampton University, Hampton, Va., with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Media Arts, Print Journalism concentration. He has a Master’s degree in Technology Systems, Network Management concentration, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Information Assurance from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC.

David has worked for the State of North Carolina since 1993 and has worked in Information Technology since 1984 including positions at the Department of Defense, the Federal Government and the private sector. David spent 11 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was the Associate Director of Distributed Computing Systems for Administrative Information Services. Also during his time at UNC Chapel Hill, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Practice for the School of Information and Library Sciences where he taught computer networking from 1995 through 2004.

David has been managing technology professionals since 1996. David is a 1997 graduate of UNC’s University Management Development Program and is a 2007 graduate of the State of North Carolina Chief Information Officer Certification program offered through the UNC Chapel Hill School of Government.

David holds ITIL, Cisco, Microsoft and Novell technical certifications, is a member of the Epsilon Pi Tau technical honor society and has published two papers on open source technology.
