Mitchell Appointed Visiting Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Ecology

Professor Shannon Mitchell, RDH, MS has been appointed as a full time Visiting Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Ecology.  Professor Mitchell graduated from Old Dominion University with a BS in Dental Hygiene. She worked as a public health dental hygienist for 5 years in Hampton Virginia. In 1990 she graduated from the Master of Science degree program in Dental Hygiene at the UNC School of Dentistry.  For eleven years Shannon served as a full-time faculty member and directed both the first and second year clinical dental hygiene courses at UNC. From 2002-2010 Shannon served as an adjunct faculty member working in the dental and dental hygiene clinical programs and the graduate program in Dental Hygiene.

She has received many teaching excellence awards during her tenure at UNC from both graduate and undergraduate students.  In 2000 she received an American Dental Education Association, Presidential Citation for her leadership role with the section on dental hygiene education, specifically for her development of the clinical dental hygiene coordinators group.

In her current position, Professor Mitchell will be directing four courses in the MS Dental Hygiene program, teaching in the dental hygiene clinics and directing the predoctoral scaling course for first year dental students.
