Southerland named as Dean at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry

J2010-12-07_southerlandanet Southerland, BA, BS, DDS, MPH, PhD has been named as the incoming Dean of the Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry located in Nashville, Tennessee. The School was founded in 1886, and enrolls approximately 55 dental students a year.

In addition to educating and training dentists, the School also offers advanced education programs for oral and maxillofacial surgery and general practice residency. Meharry Medical College is currently the largest private historically black institution in the United States solely dedicated to educating healthcare professionals and scientists.

Doctor Southerland is highly qualified for her new position. From the University at North Carolina at Chapel Hill she earned the following degrees and certificates: BA (1982), BS (dental hygiene, 1984), DDS (1989), GPR (1991), MPH (1994) and PhD (2005).

Since 2002 Dr. Southerland has served as Chair, Department of Hospital Dentistry and Chief of the Oral Medicine Service, both at UNC Hospitals. Doctor Southerland was promoted to Clinical Associate Professor in 2009.

Among other affiliations, Dr. Southerland is a member of the National Dental Association, the Old North State Dental Society, the American Association of Hospital Dentists, and the American/International Associations for Dental Research.
