Employees Honored for Professional Excellence

Five UNC School of Dentistry staff members recently received Employee Excellence Awards for their exceptional professional contributions to the school’s mission of teaching, research, patient care and service.

School of Dentistry faculty and staff nominate colleagues for the awards by submitting an individual’s name, along with narrative describing the characteristics that make that individual an exceptional employee. For the fall 2010 awards, the school’s Human Relations Committee received nominations for 31 employees.

The fall 2010 award recipients are:

  • Terry Barker, DDS registrar, Office of Academic Affairs
  • Sally Engler, dental assistant, Dental Faculty Practice
  • Glen Lawrence, administrative accounting officer, Administrative Accounting
  • Darryl Mangum, dental assistant supervisor, Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program
  • Linda Parker, patient relations representative, Office of Clinical Affairs

“The School of Dentistry is a very busy place, and our family of employees work extremely hard to keep the institution moving forward in its mission areas of patient care, teaching, research and service,” the school’s interim dean, Dr. John W. Stamm, said to the award recipients. “The work we do is very visible, not only to our colleagues in the school, but also to the students we teach and the patients to whom we provide high quality care. It is because of your acknowledged efforts, and dedicated work of your fellow-employees, that the school has earned its reputation for excellence across the board. How gratifying it is to realize that your fellow employees have picked up on this.”

The award comes with a $500 prize. The Employee Excellence Award program was revised two years ago and is sponsored by each academic department, the Dental Research Center, the Dean’s Office and the Dental Foundation of North Carolina. Five employee award recipients are selected twice a year.
