Smith Joins School as Assistant Dean for Human Resources
Bonnie O. Smith, who has more than 15 years of human resources experience at UNC-Chapel Hill, has been named assistant dean for human resources at the University’s School of Dentistry.
Her first day at the School is today (Nov. 10). Among Smith’s principal responsibilities are to provide advice and counsel on all human resources matters, including working with School administration to develop and implement HR policies and procedures. She also will collaborate with academic units and programs in developing and implementing “best practice” activities, help create staff development and enrichment programs, and manage the day-to-day operations of the School’s Office of Human Resources.
Before joining the School of Dentistry, Smith was senior human resources representative for the Duke University School of Medicine.
Her UNC-Chapel Hill experience includes roles as HR records and data management director for the University’s Office of Human Resources, administrative officer for the School of Medicine’s Human Resources Office, employment recruiter for the University, personnel director for Facilities Services and HR manager for Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Her UNC-Chapel Hill honors for outstanding accomplishments include Star Heels Awards at the Office of Human Resources and School of Medicine, and the Office of Human Resources’ Customer Service and Ambassadorship awards. She is a 1997 graduate of the University Management Development Program. Within her professional field, Smith has earned the designation of Certified Compensation Professional, a national recognition signifying excellence in all aspects of compensation.
Smith was a captain in the U.S. Army, and stationed at Fort Bragg and what was then West Germany, before joining the University’s Kenan-Flagler Business School in 1991. In her Army role, she served as a personnel officer supervising as many as 50 soldiers who provided personnel and administrative support to more than 18,000 soldiers and civilians. She has received two Army Commendation Medals and one Army Achievement Medal.
She received her bachelor’s degree, cum laude and as a Distinguished Military Graduate, from Wake Forest University in 1985.
“The School of Dentistry is looking forward to Ms. Bonnie Smith joining its administrative team,” said Dr. Ken May, vice dean. “She brings with her not only an extensive University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill human resources background, but also a contagious energy necessary to meet the needs of the dental school’s broad range of employees and students.”
