Three Students Win Hinman Scholarships

Three School of Dentistry students have received scholarships from the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society.

Doctor of dental science students Jeffrey D. Hyde (of Beaverton, Ore.) and Trevor M. Jensen (of Henderson, Nev.), both class of 2007, and Candina A. Bynum of Kinston, who graduated in May with a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene, received the scholarships at a luncheon recently held at the 94th Hinman Dental Meeting in Atlanta.

This year, the society provided scholarships and gifts totaling more than $250,000 to dental, dental hygiene, laboratory technician and dental assisting students at 37 Southeastern colleges and universities, as well as dental education groups and clinics.

Recipients were selected by their schools and must be junior student members of the American Dental Association, as well as in the top 10 percent of their class.

The Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society has promoted continuing education in the dental profession since 1912. It began granting scholarships to dental students in 1986, adding dental hygiene students to the program in 1989, laboratory technician students in 2003 and dental assisting students last year.
