James Beck receives AADR Distinguished Scientist Award

The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) presented its Distinguished Scientist Award to James D. Beck at the 2004 Annual Session of the IADR-AADR-CADR in Honolulu, HI.  The Award, given only every three years, recognizes and honors outstanding research of particular significance in oral science. Selection criteria for the Award include (1) originality and creativity of contributions, (2) sustained record of achievement, and (3) importance/significance of the research for oral health. The Award is supported by GlaxoSmithKline and consists of a $5,000 cash prize and a plaque.

A Kenan Professor in the Department of Dental Ecology at the School of Dentistry, Dr. Beck also hold appointments as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at UNC, Adjunct Fellow at the Center for Health Services Research at UNC, and Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

He is a member of the editorial review board for the Journal of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, the Journal of Periodontology and the Journal of Periodontal Research. Dr. Beck directs the Master of Science Program in geriatric dentistry and teaches aging subjects in the dental curriculum. He also directs the Ph.D. Program in oral epidemiology.

Dr. Beck has conducted research in geriatric dentistry, dental epidemiology, and health services and has published over a hundred journal articles and book chapters.
