Guckes Named Assistant Dean for Predoctoral Education
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Al Guckes, Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, has joined the Office of Academic Affairs in the capacity of Assistant Dean for Predoctoral Education. For the last several months he has been serving in this capacity as Interim Assistant Dean for Predoctoral Education. Dr. Guckes earned his DDS at Temple University in Philadelphia, completed a dental internship at the United States Public Health Service Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, and received a MSD in Prosthodontics from the University of Washington School Of Dentistry in Seattle. Before coming to Chapel Hill, Dr. Guckes was Deputy Clinical Director, NIDCR and Chief, Patient Care and Clinical Studies Section, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. While a U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Officer he received the United States Public Health Service Meritorious Service Award, and the United States Public Health Service Chief Dental Officer’s Exemplary Career Service Award. Dr. Guckes came to the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1994 and directed the graduate program in prosthodontics until 1998. Dr. Guckes has received three Teacher Excellence Awards from dental classes, including the prestigious Richard F. Hunt Award for Teaching Excellence in 2002. Dr. Guckes has made many contributions to improving dental education and will further the School’s commitment to excellence in dental education.
