Socransky presents Safford Fellowship Lectures
This week the faculty of the Department of Periodontology announced the establishment of the Safford Fellowship for Dental Research. The first Safford Fellow is Dr. Sigmund Socransky, senior member of the staff at the Forsyth Institute in Boston and professor at Harvard. Socransky and his extraordinary research career are well known to colleagues and friends at UNC.
Dr. Socransky has provided lunch-time lectures this week presenting current research issues as they relate to the oral microflora and oral diseases.
On Friday October 11 from 10:00-1:00 in Brauer 04, Socransky will present a half-day course in which he will cover in depth the relationship of the oral flora to the management of patients with caries, periodontal disease and peri-implant disease. The Friday morning lecture will focus on current concepts of infectious diseases and will look to the future anticipating changes based on new hypotheses and new research findings.
This Fellowship is made possible through the generosity of the Burch-Safford Foundation. The Fellowship allows the Department of Periodontology to bring a distinguished scholar to the School who over the course of a week would interact with faculty, residents, alumni, and friends.
The school and the department of periodontology are pleased to welcome Dr. Sigmund Socransky to UNC and to North Carolina as the first Safford Fellow.
