School of Dentistry Hosts International Conference on Periodontal Research

The department of periodontology at the UNC School of Dentistry, along with the UNC Comprehensive Center for Inflammatory Disorders and the UNC Center for Oral and Systemic Diseases will host the 12th International Conference on Periodontal Research June 5-9, 2002.

Ray Williams, professor and chair of periodontology and Steven Offenbacher professor of periodontology and co-director of the Center for Oral and Systemic Diseases chair the program “Molecular Determinants of Risk.”

The program features 17 scientists from around the world. More than 150 scientists and clinicians are expected for the conference. The conference will focus on the role of predetermined risk factors such as genetics in developing illnesses that are linked to periodontal diseases. Scientists will also present new information about the ability of bacteria to cause diseases and the dual capacity of the inflammatory response to give protection and to contribute to oral and systemic diseases.

There will also be up to date information about the link of inflammation in the oral cavity to oral and systemic disease.
