Deliargyris Receives Award for COSD Project

Mikas Deliargyris, MD, former chief fellow in training at UNC School of Medicine, who participated in a research project at CCID’s Center for Oral and Systemic Diseases at the School of Dentistry recently received a prize for that work. Deliargyris, a former cardiology resident, won the David W. Haach Memorial Award in Cardiovascular Research for “Effect of Periodontal Disease on C-Reactive Protein in Acute Myocardial Infarction” at the Annual Astra Zeneca Cardiovascular Young Investigator’s Forum. The award includes $10,000 for continued research.

The project brought together both periodontal and cardiology residents as part of the center’s research training center.

” It is quite exciting to see our young faculty doing multidisciplinary research in an area of periodontal medicine that is well received by the cardiology research community,” said Steven Offenbacher, professor of periodontology and director of the center.

Deliargyris is currently on faculty at Bowman Gray School of Medical School.
