Grover Cleveland Hunter Dies

Grover Cleveland Hunter, 85, former professor and chairman of the department of oral pathology, periodontology and dental hygiene at the School of Dentistry died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Carteret General Hospital, Morehead City, N.C.

He was an associate professor of oral pathology at Emory University (1941-1952) before coming to the UNC School of Dentistry to establish the department of oral pathology, periodontology and dental hygiene in 1952. He retired in 1979.

Hunter was on the Dental Foundation of North Carolina Board of Directors (1973) and a member of the vestry at St. Phillips Church, Durham, N.C. (1974-1977). He was a recipient of the Wisdom Award of Honor(1971) and received the Recognition Award for Distinguished Service to UNC. Hunter was a member of the North Carolina Dental Society, Southern Academy of Periodontists, the American Academy of Periodontology, the Cousteau Society (Founding Member) and was named diplomate in American Board of Oral Pathology. He co-author of Periodontics for the Dental Hygienist (1968).

He contributed articles to professional journals and chapters to several textbooks in the field, and poems to The New York Times and Emory University Quarterly.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Hunter; daughter, Carolyn Hunter Dickerson of Newport and a grandson, Lawrence Hunter of Newport. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Anne Hunter and a son, James M. Hunter. Memorial cards and letters may be sent to: Carolyn Hunter Dickerson, 106 Pearson Circle Ext., Newport, N.C. 28570.
